HP staff died due to overwork

Work versus health

This topic wasn’t listed on my things to blog as posted in my earlier entry, but it’s a timely and helpful topic to discuss and share.

I got an email from my sister regarding the HP staff who died due to overwork. It’s a scary story and a sad one.

May Leong, a contract staff of HP died due to heart attack. She’s just 29. So young indeed, and had a great potential. She was overstressed at HP. She had a small team to do the gigantic tasks at her office. Based from her latest and eventually the last entry she posted at her multiply account, I sensed that she saw her death coming (?!). See the paragraph stating about it which I culled from her entry here.

Just yesterday, I received an email from my job agency saying that a contract staff who’s working in HP as well, passed away from heart attack, leaving his wife & kids… deja vu? coincidental? a warning sign? I dunno. I don’t wanna end up dead for the sake of dough. The moral of the story is don’t ever fall in love with your company or your job.

May is right…”never fall in love with your company or your job”…but she exceeded her limit before she was able to control what she was fearing for her health. BUT she left us with this important tip so that we could prevent jeopardizing our health because of work.

May we all learn from May’s story and fate. Don’t let work rival with our health. Health is wealth. Always remember that we are here on earth to live and not to work all the time of our lives. Work is only temporal. It’s fleeting. There are many jobs and companies out there, BUT there is only one life.

This is really sad. We are human and not robots. As they say, baka sa sobrang trabaho mo, yung kinikita mo, kulang pa sa pagpapagamot mo kapag nagkasakit ka… Based on May’s post, she chose to work even if she doesn’t feel good anymore. The result, her own life was taken… really really sad. ..

an excerpt from my boss. (a discussion regarding overtime work of some officemates)…

Thanks for this reminder. Medyo overwork din yata ako lately. Madalas kulang na rin sa tulog.

ako naman its ok to fall in love with the job kasi you work best that way… but then we must always have it balanced. yin yang. dapat adequate rest talaga… and of course the right diet. she might be eating noodles all the time without vitamins. yan nakamamatay.

    salamat sa reminder..

i agree about not falling in love with your company. but falling in love with your job can be different for a lot of people. as for me, i have come to realize that it is best to sleep during office hours. (makes you feel better when you come home)

Sad story, but things like this do happen. Hope we can spread the word that there is such a thing as “work life balance”.

Wow. So many people are slowly killing themselves with stress and overwork these days. There’s really no “down-time” anymore now with cell phones, blackberries, the internet, etc.

I used to work for HP…and umm, yeah - they tend to over work their peoples.

Totally feel bad for May’s kids. : (

Hello people, I am working in HP and have been with company for almost 7 yrs…need to share with you that it is not true that we are overworked here…it really depends on the individual, I mean if we do not learn to say No to unreasonable demands, or even push ourselves unnecessarily over the limit…we really only have ourselves to blame…we should take responsibility for our lives.

I sympathize with May certainly and I do believe we can not always blame our surroundings for the things that come our way…for we do have control at the end of the day.
