E-bulletins
I use friendster to see get a glimpse of my two brothers’ online world; to know their interests; to know about their friends - it’s because we live oceans and continents apart.
I use friendster to post pics, and to be connected as well to my friends.
Friendster has a section for posting bulletins. Sometimes, I read some posts in my network’s bulletin.
Just recently, I was caught up in man-made pranks, the usual chain letters.
I followed it once since “there was no harm”, I said to myself, “and besides it’s about God”. There was no such thing as punishment or reward in that article I reposted. And, my faith didn’t dwell on that article. I just reposted it to help spread some Good News.
Then after a few days, I opened a link (from my brother#2). I had the slightest idea if it was forwarded to him. I opened the link since I was interested to know what he’d just posted. I started reading it, but didn’t finish the article. Maybe I only read 3/4 of the article. I was feeling fidgety about the article so I stopped reading it. I was getting to that part where it was already scaring me?! Not actually - maybe more of making me angry. Of course, I didn’t repost it. The usual “punishment” that comes from reading such chain letters (wherein, of course, opening a certain post for the first time won’t tell us if it’s a chain or not unless we have read it through) is to repost them in our bulletin as well. Otherwise, there’s a scary(nonsense) consequence for not reposting it. Brrr..
I am starting to detest such social networking sites, I mean, not these sites but the people who started to pollute others’ minds by posting such silly things! (This reminds me to tell my youngest brother(#2) to refrain from opening his network’s bulletin; OR, maybe friendster should give us an option to hide or show the bulletin).
Social networking sites are supposed to be for socialization, for bringing out the bests in ourselves (is that why we post pictures), for connecting, for bridging the gaps between, and among friends from different places, for getting friendships or any other forms of relationships, and for the real purpose of networking! Bulletins are supposed to be used the right way - no chain letters please!
Friendster bulletins or any other bulletins in social networking sites should serve their real purpose - online BULLETINS. What do we mean by bulletins? Bulletins are where we post brief reports for news, updates, stories that are beneficial to people. The world is so much overload with information. Please, let’s help in screening what information to share. Let’s be more cautious of what we post, of what we share on the Web. Remember, not all users are mature enough to understand or to refrain from reposting such silly articles. There are many users out there who are teenagers! Are we just gonna let them believe such lies and pranks, and live behind the shadows of fear out of these chain letters/messages?
I hope not.
Thank you.

Hi Fingertalks,
I agree with you 100%. I don’t subscribe to chain letters and I completely disregard them whenever I receive one. And I don’t go for the scaring tactics they use to scare the wits out of vulnerable people. To me, chain letters are trash that should be thrown in the waste basket. Thanks for the informative post. God bless and have a wonderful and peaceful day always.

Chain letters are simply… distasteful to say the least. Not only that they may, as you pointed out, have negative consequences on children who might read them, but I personally find it rather aggressive, even if made for purposes of “joke”, to send them. It’s in a way intrusion against my free will and i don’t like to be forced by fear of some irrational retribution to do anything.
