Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day to my papa, and to all fathers out there!

It’s past 9p.m. here, but it’s early morning back home. I wanted to greet papa a happy father’s day via SMS, but I might awake him. So I’d probably greet my father tomorrow.

It’s not only during this occasion that we should honor our fathers, the same for mothers during mother’s day. It’s not only during father’s day that we should tell them how much we love them. We should often tell them our words of appreciation for them for their loving words and actions, strength, and indomitable courage to raise us. For this, I’d like to give thanks and honor my father for being the best dad to us, and the best husband to mama. We love you much, Papa!

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to surprise my cousin, a father of three young boys. His family members are based back home, so he’s all alone here. I surprised him by giving the cards and gifts that his sons and wife prepared for him. They sent the gifts to me last month, and asked me to surprise my cousin.

I saw how his eyes shed a tear or two…that gripping emotion from a father who’s away from his family because of work reasons. I saw how he wanted to control the tears because I was standing in front of him, taking pictures to capture the moment while his hands were trembling while opening the three cards one by one. In between sighs, he was looking at the camera. I suddenly put off taking his pictures to give him the solitude he much deserved. He was still in tears when he put the cards down in the white plastic bag that enveloped those cards, chocolate chips, and box of polo, perhaps. I can empathize with him, with his emotions. The moment was frozen into my mind…here’s what the joy of having a father - someone that the kids would look up to, someone who is seen by the kids as their hero, someone who would always strive to give their best whatever it takes.

To all kids out there, we should all honor our fathers. We should all show them our love and respect in whatever age we are in right now. A pat on the back, a surprised phone call or text, a card or an e-card, a flower or a bouquet (I remember last year’s father’s day, my sister gave Papa a bouquet of flowers…that was awesome! Mama’s grinning then because Papa brought the flowers back to our province, and he was handling it with his hands! It’s all because he followed my sister’s request to bring the flowers with him. Can you imagine the scenario?)…a treat to the facial spa (yes, I did that to my Papa, and I got a scold from my brother because Papa’s face got hurt while the not-so-good attendant pricked Papa’s face)…and other more things could do wonders and bring great smile from our fathers.

To my father, and to all fathers out there, we salute you. Happy father’s day to you all!
